The Law of The Harvest

THE LAW OF THE HARVEST                  September 2019

Here in Ukraine, fall is in the air and farmers markets are displaying a colorful assortment of
fruits and vegetables. It’s harvest time ! Our favorite season.
We have always loved gardens and have known some very amazing gardeners. Grandpa McAllister grew an incredible bounty of fruits and vegetables on his little garden in Washington Terrace, every year.  Grandpa Wade (Big Al) could grow tomatoes like nobody’s  business ( and a pretty good crop of weeds by seasons’ end.)  Grandpa Stone always had the best garden in North Ogden which helped feed his large family of 9 growing children. In Wellsville, even though our growing season was short, the soul was rich.  Blake and Aaron were young and growing, still, every year we grew banana squash bigger than they were!   We think that even God loves a good garden. ( Gen 2:8-9) “ And the Lord God planted a garden eastward in Eden; and there he put the man whom he had formed. And out of the ground, made the Lord to grow every tree that is pleasant to the sight and good for food...”
God operates through laws and this time of year The “Law of The Harvest” is fully evident. That Law  simply stated is that whatever you sow ( plant) you will reap ( harvest). We could always count on harvesting squash IF we planted squash seeds and watered and care for the plants. Tomato seeds grew tomatoes, cucumber seeds grew cucumbers and so forth. Whatever we planted is what we got at harvest time- without fail.
This Law of The Harvest also applies to spiritual matters.  Paul explained this principle to the Saints in Galatia. (Gal. 6:7) “ Be not deceived; God is not mocked: for whatsoever a man soweth, that shall he also reap.” D&C 6:33 explains  this Law clearly. “ Fear not to do good, my sons, for whatever ye sow, that shall ye also reap; therefore, if ye sow good ye shall also reap good for your reward.” Alma explained how this Law applied to many who had recently perished in war. ( Alma 3:26-27) “ And In one year were thousands and tens of thousands of souls sent to the eternal world, that they might reap their rewards according to their works, whether they were good or whether they were bad, to reap eternal happiness or eternal misery, according to the spirit which they listed to obey, whether it be a good spirit or a bad one. For every man receiveth wages of him whom he listeth to obey,...”
We like the lines from a song we sing in church, hymn 216.
“We are sowing, daily sowing, countless seeds in of good and ill. By a whisper sow we blessings; by a breath we scatter strife. In our words and thoughts and actions lie the seeds of death and life.”
The next time you plant a garden- be thankful for the Law of The Harvest. Know that whatever you choose to plant, water and care for, that is exactly what you can count on enjoying at Harvest time.
As you enjoy Harvest Season, we hope that you will reflect upon life!s corollary- That What you do today, either good or bad, will determine what you Harvest in the future. Be careful what you plant today so you’ll be sure to enjoy your harvest in the future!
Much Love-
The Grandparent Chronicles
