The Voices We Choose To Hear
Around 2,000 years ago, the Apostle Paul warned the Corinthians of “so many kinds of voices in the world.” If Paul were alive today- with the invention of radio, television, the internet and social media, we can only imagine the increased concern he would have with the thousands of additional voices vying for our attention!
“The voices
I hear are persuasive, seductive, fascinating and confusing. Speaking across the earth, they are part of
a mighty battle that is being waged for the minds of men.”(Gordon B. Hinckley April
Gen Conf. 1966) “Too many voices are
deceptive, seductive and can pull us off the covenant path.”(Russell M. Nelson,
“Make time for the Lord”, General Conf. October 2021) “If most of the
information you get comes from social or other media, your ability to hear the
whisperings of the spirit will be diminished. If you are not also seeking the
Lord through daily prayer and gospel study, you leave yourself vulnerable to
philosophies that might be intriguing but are not true. Even saints who are
otherwise faithful can be derailed by the steady beat of Babylon’s band.”(ibid;
RMN)
Jacob in the
Book of Mormon explains the importance of listening to the spirit of the lord.
(Jacob 4:13) “The spirit speaketh of things as they really are and really will
be.” Nephi reminds us that the Spirit “will
show unto you all things what ye should do.”
(2Nephi 32:5)
A modern
prophet, David O. McKay, once taught that “the greatest battles that will ever
be fought take place within the human mind.” In order to win those battles, we
will urgently need to know how to hear and listen to the voice of the Lord
above all the many competing voices. Someone once advised, “If you want to talk
to God, Pray. If you want to hear God, read his scriptures.” The voice of God
can also be heard in the voice of his ancient and modern prophets. Listen to what
the living prophet recently said; “I plead with you today to counter the lure
of the world by making time for the lord in your life- each and every day.” (Russell
M Nelson, Make Time for the Lord, Gen Conf Oct 2021) President Thomas S. Monson
once taught:” We watch. We wait. We listen for that still small voice. When it speaks,
wise men and women obey.” (Thomas S Monson, “The Spirit Giveth Life”, Ensign or
Liahona June 1997, 4)
“And so, we
need to decide which among all the different voices we will obey. Will we
follow the unreliable voices advocated by the world, or will we do the work
required to allow our Father’s voice to guide us in our decisions and protect
us from danger? The more diligently we seek His voice, the easier it becomes to
hear. It is not that His voice gets louder but that our ability to hear it has
increased”. (Elder David P. Homer- Q of 70 Gen Conf April 2019, p 41)
