What Profit a Prophet ?
When I was a
young man living In Ogden, Utah, we had a special Aaronic Priesthood
commemoration event in Huntsville, Utah.
We gathered
on a Saturday in May for fun and food.
The highlight of the day was to be a visit from a Huntsville native,
David O. McKay, prophet and president of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day
Saints. All activity suddenly stopped as we saw a black limousine drive up and
a stately, snow white haired prophet exit the car and come to the podium to
speak to us.
As this
aged, majestic man began to speak, I will never forget how it felt when the
Holy Ghost bore powerful witness to my soul that here indeed was a true prophet
of the living God!
When I was
born, George Albert Smith was the prophet. Since then, there have been 10 more
prophets and presidents of the church in my lifetime. With the passing of Russel
M. Nelson on September 27, 2025, Dallin H. Oaks was soon after set apart and
sustained as the 18th prophet and president of the church. Each prophet comes with his own appearance
and personality but all are called of God to lead his people and church in
their own time.
But what
profit is a prophet for you and for me? The old testament prophet Amos
explained; “surely the lord God will do nothing, but he revealeth his secret
unto his servants the prophets.” ( Amos 3:7) Also,(Proverbs 29:18) reminds us
that “ where there is no vision, the people perish.” Do we need vision and direction from God for
our day? We’ve never needed it more!
We want our
posterity to know that God loves you! That “ He is the same yesterday, today
and forever!” (Moroni 10:19) If He spoke to prophets of old like Moses, Elijah and Isaiah;
He speaks through prophets today. That prophet is Dallin H. Oaks- of this we
are certain! May we all be wise enough to seek his counsel and to follow it.
